What rules of engagement cover
Most rules of engagement fit on one page. A typical set covers:
- Definitions. What counts as an existing customer and an active opportunity, for example an open CRM opportunity with a next step, created before the partner's submission.
- Registration first. Ownership comes from an approved deal registration with a timestamp, not from who says they knew the buyer first.
- Named accounts. If direct sales keeps certain strategic accounts, they are listed and shared with partners.
- Price floors. No channel quotes below a published floor without approval.
- Online purchases. How a partner gets credit when their registered customer buys through self-serve.
- Renewals and expansion. Whether partner fees or margin apply after the first contract.
- Compensation neutrality. Reps get quota credit on partner deals in their territory.
- Disputes. One named decision maker and a deadline for decisions.
Why they matter
Most channel conflict comes from unclear account ownership and from comp plans that make reps and partners compete for credit. Written rules do not stop overlaps, but they make each one quick to settle, because the answer is in the policy and the CRM record rather than in a debate.
They also build partner trust. A partner who knows the vendor's sales team cannot take a registered deal has a reason to register early, which improves partner attribution and pipeline visibility.
Example
Signal Partners registers Kestrel Foods on August 4. On August 18, a sales rep at the vendor gets an inbound demo request from Kestrel and asks to own the deal.
The rules of engagement say an approved registration created before any open opportunity gives the partner ownership for 90 days, and that reps receive quota credit on partner deals in their territory. The partner manager checks the CRM, confirms there was no opportunity before August 4, and confirms Signal Partners owns the deal. The rep joins as the vendor's seller on the account. Kestrel signs in October, Signal Partners earns its fee and the rep gets quota credit.
